About
Based in Albany, Shotokan Karate Institute offers traditional Shotokan karate classes for students of all ages in Alameda County and across the East Bay. Our dojo has been teaching since 1990, and our founder and director, Hanshi Sharifi, gives personal attention to students at every level.
We welcome learners from young children through adults in their seventies and beyond. Beyond the techniques themselves, we focus on the basics as a solid foundation, along with kihon, kata, bunkai, and kumite in our upper belt classes.
Practical self-defense is part of the curriculum, and students are taught courtesy and attentive etiquette in every class. Our senior black belts help teach with patience and without ego or aggression, which keeps the atmosphere welcoming for serious students of all backgrounds.
